Syniak, Mountain summit in Carpathian Mountains, Ukraine
Syniak is a mountain summit in the eastern Carpathians with a height of 1,665 meters (5,463 feet). The landscape features alpine meadows and stone-covered sections that shape the ascent.
The mountain first appeared in local records during the 18th century when people documented its characteristic blue appearance in mountain air. This optical phenomenon shaped how the place became known throughout the region.
Local folklore tells of three boys named Yavir, Khoma, and Syniak who searched for a youth-giving flower before a wizard transformed them into mountains. This story remains alive in the region today and shapes how people experience the place.
Hiking trails to the summit start from Bukovel and follow the East-Carpathian Tourist Path. Good footwear and weather protection are recommended since conditions can change quickly at higher elevations.
The mountain slopes contain yellow-grey lichens that create a blue shade in mountain air depending on light conditions. This visual effect is the origin of the name, which means blue in Ukrainian.
