Probiy, Waterfall in Yaremche, Ukraine
Probiy is a waterfall on the Prut River in Yaremche, a town in the Ukrainian Carpathians, where water drops around 8 meters (26 feet) over a rocky ledge. The river runs through a narrow gorge at this point, which pushes the current into a powerful churn at the base.
The waterfall was known in the 19th century but looked different, as the riverbed has gradually been reshaped by erosion over time. That slow wearing of the rock is what gave the falls their current shape.
Local youth are known to jump from the bridge that crosses just above the falls, a tradition that draws curious onlookers. Standing on that bridge, visitors can feel the spray and hear the roar of the water below.
Several paths lead to the waterfall and offer views from different angles. After rainy spells the flow is strongest, though the rocks near the base can be slippery when wet.
The rocky drop acts as a natural barrier in the river that only a few fish species, such as brook trout, can pass. This makes the spot useful for researchers who track rare fish living in the upper Prut.
