Boldyni hory, Protected hills in Chernihiv, Ukraine.
Boldyni hory are wooded hills that rise 20 to 35 meters (65 to 115 feet) above the surrounding terrain south of the Stryzhen River floodplain. They form a gentle arc and create natural elevation in the flat landscape of the region.
The hills grew from burial sites spanning the 9th to 11th centuries, with roughly 230 preserved burial mounds arranged in six groups. These archaeological layers reveal continuous settlement of the area across many centuries.
The Trinity Monastery, built in the late 17th century, serves as a spiritual center and draws visitors interested in Ukrainian heritage. The monks and worshippers who gather here maintain traditions that have shaped the region's identity for generations.
The site is reachable on foot or by public transportation, about two kilometers from Chernihiv's center. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the grassy hills can be challenging to explore thoroughly.
Hidden within the hills are the Saint Anthony Caves from the 11th century, featuring underground passages that link to the Church of St. Elijah. These concealed chambers represent a rare example of early medieval cave structures in the region.
