Kryvyi Rih arboretum, botanical garden in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine
The Kryvyi Rih arboretum is a large park covering about 50 hectares on the eastern side of the city, where more than 500 species of trees and shrubs grow. The plants are arranged in distinct sections, offering visitors different sights across all seasons, from spring blossoms to autumn colors.
The first trees were planted in the mid-1950s and the park was officially designated a protected area in 1993. The site transformed from neglected wetlands into a managed green space through decades of community effort.
The space originated from abandoned wetlands that locals transformed into a community green area over decades. Today visitors experience a place shaped by generations of care, where families gather to walk, rest, and connect with nature.
The paths through the park are simple to walk and let visitors move easily between different planted sections. Benches are available for resting, and the park becomes busier on weekends when families arrive for walks and picnics, while weekdays remain quieter.
The park contains plants from various regions of Ukraine and other countries, including rare and unusual species for the area such as yews and fragrant pines. Scientists use the space for developing new plant varieties and studying how vegetation can benefit the local environment.
