Sadko Fountain, Cascade fountain in Sumy, Ukraine
The Sadko Fountain is a cascade fountain in Sumy featuring a central bronze sculpture of a musician figure with water flowing down multiple levels into an illuminated basin. The sculptural work and water play combine to create a focal point in public space.
The fountain was built in 1985 after the bronze sculpture had waited about ten years for installation. A major restoration in 2010 renewed the water systems and brought the entire installation back to full condition.
The fountain references a merchant and musician from Slavic folklore, a figure known for magical performances in ancient stories. The sculpture and its placement tell this traditional tale to those passing by.
The fountain sits at the intersection of Kharkivska Street and Heroiv Sumshchyny and has benches for visitors to sit. You can visit it during the day and in the evening when the lighting is turned on.
The bronze sculpture was created by artist Yevhen Kulikov in 1975 but then waited a full decade for its final placement. This makes it a special work that endured a long pause before becoming part of the city's appearance.
