Rocks of MODR, Geological monument in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine.
The Rocks of MODR are an iron schist formation that spans across the Inhulets Valley and displays multiple geological layers and mineral compositions. The site shows the varied rock types and structures that developed over billions of years within this natural landscape.
These rocks formed roughly 2 billion years ago during Earth's earliest periods, making them among the oldest known formations in the region. The site received official protection status in 1975 to preserve these ancient geological structures for future study.
The rocks take their name from a former mining village called MODR, an acronym for an international relief organization that once supported the area. Today the village has largely disappeared, but its name lives on through this natural site.
The site is accessible by public transportation from downtown Kryvyi Rih and can be visited during daylight hours. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven with natural rock surfaces and varied ground conditions throughout the area.
The rock layers contain mineral deposits that provide researchers with key data about Earth's geological processes from its earliest stages. These ancient formations allow scientists to study how our planet developed during its first billion years of existence.
