Domennaia pech No. 9, Industrial furnace in Metallurgical Raion, Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine.
Domennaia pech No. 9 is a blast furnace at the ArcelorMittal plant in the Metallurgical Raion of Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. It consists of a large smelting tower surrounded by a network of pipes, metal frameworks, and cooling systems that keep the operation running.
The furnace started operating in 1974, when Kryvyi Rih was at the center of Soviet steel production and the region was expanding rapidly. The plant later became part of the ArcelorMittal group and has continued to operate since then.
Kryvyi Rih has long been a steel city, and furnaces like this one are woven into everyday life for many families in the Metallurgical Raion. The towers and pipes are visible from far away and form a familiar part of the local skyline.
The furnace sits inside an active industrial site that is not open to the general public. A visit requires prior authorization from the plant management and compliance with safety rules on the premises.
The gases produced during iron smelting are not simply burned off but are captured, cleaned, and fed back into the plant as fuel. This closed-loop approach means the furnace partly powers itself using what would otherwise be waste.
