Pedestrian Bridge, Footbridge over Desna River in Chernihiv, Ukraine
The Pedestrian Bridge is a metal structure that spans approximately 95 meters across the Desna River and is designed only for foot traffic. The 6-meter-wide walking path has railings on both sides and connects the eastern and western parts of the city.
The structure was completed in 1987 by the Central Research and Design Institute of Building Metal Structures and provided the city with an important new link. This crossing was designed to ease movement between the two riverbanks.
The bridge railings display yellow and blue stripes that residents painted to express their national identity. These colors serve as a visible reminder of community pride in this public crossing.
The bridge is accessible daily to pedestrians and provides a dry crossing over the river in almost any weather. It is best to wear sturdy shoes, especially after rain, when the metal surface can become slippery.
The bridge gained strategic importance during the 2022 siege when another crossing was destroyed and this became the main supply route for the city. Many residents remember how critical this crossing was during the most difficult period.
