Chernihiv Regional historical museum

The Chernihiv Regional Historical Museum is housed in a former banking building and displays over 230,000 items spanning many centuries of Ukrainian heritage. The collection includes costumes, weapons, manuscripts, and artworks that document the cultural development of the region.

The museum was established in 1896 by philanthropist Vasyl Tarnowsky Jr., who donated his personal collection of local antiquities and historical artifacts. This initial gathering of objects formed the foundation for the extensive regional archive that exists today.

The collection displays objects from different periods of Ukrainian history, including manuscripts, artworks, weapons, and everyday items. Visitors can see how people in this region lived and worked from ancient times through today.

The museum is open daily except on Thursdays, and visitors can join guided tours conducted in Ukrainian and English. It is helpful to check opening hours in advance and wear appropriate clothing for indoor exploration.

The museum safeguards a substantial collection of 758 items connected to poet Taras Shevchenko, including original letters, drawings, and paintings. This assembly offers rare insights into the life and creative output of this significant cultural figure.
