Kensal Green, Residential district in northwest London, Great Britain
Kensal Green runs along Harrow Road, roughly 7 kilometers from Charing Cross, within the London Borough of Brent and partly into Kensington and Chelsea. The area consists mainly of residential streets with Victorian terraced houses and some newer housing developments along the main roads.
The area transformed from agricultural land after the Grand Junction Canal arrived in 1805, turning into a residential district. The establishment of Kensal Green Cemetery in 1832 accelerated growth considerably and drew many new residents.
The neighborhood houses The Lexi, the first independent British cinema, where volunteers screen current films and live opera while donating proceeds to charity. The district maintains this community spirit through local projects and neighborhood initiatives.
The Bakerloo Underground line connects the district to central London, while Kensal Rise station offers rail links to Richmond and Stratford. Main roads are well served by buses and lead to surrounding neighborhoods.
A tornado passed through in December 2006, affecting around 150 houses with damage reaching roughly 2 million pounds. Such weather events are extremely rare in London and continue to draw attention.
