Bourne Wood, Coniferous woodland in Farnham, England
Bourne Wood is a coniferous woodland near Farnham with dense stands of pine trees spreading across hills and valleys. A network of paths winds through the different sections, passing over naturally sandy soil.
The woodland developed into its present form through forestry management over the past 150 years with extensive tree planting. Archaeological evidence points to prehistoric use of the landscape.
The forest gained international recognition in 1999 when it served as a filming location for the movie Gladiator, leading to numerous productions.
The woodland is open year-round with parking available at the entrance for visitors. Sturdy footwear is helpful, especially after rain when sandy ground can become slippery.
A hidden section in the northern part preserves traces of a World War II military installation with structures still visible today. These remnants tell the story of the site's strategic importance during wartime.
