Amesbury, Historic riverside city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States

Amesbury is a city in northeastern Massachusetts situated along the Merrimack River. The area features rolling terrain with waterways and connects to major transportation corridors including Interstate 495 and Interstate 95.

The settlement started in 1642 as part of Salisbury before becoming an independent town with the name taken from Amesbury, England. The community gained city status in 1996.

Poet John Greenleaf Whittier made his home here and wrote many works inspired by the local landscape and community. Visitors can explore his house to see where he composed pieces deeply connected to this region.

The city sits along Interstate highways 495 and 95, offering connections to regional centers. Plan to explore by car, as most destinations are most easily reached this way.

The city transformed from a maritime hub with shipbuilding and textile mills into a center for carriage manufacturing and later automobile body production. This industrial shift shaped local craftsmanship for generations.
