Located in the northeastern corner of Massachusetts, Amesbury stretches along the Merrimack River, covering 13.7 square miles of land with hills and waterways.
The settlement began in 1642 as part of Salisbury, later becoming an independent township named after Amesbury, England, and incorporating as a city in 1996.
The residence of poet John Greenleaf Whittier remains preserved in Amesbury, where he composed numerous works reflecting the local community and natural environment.
The city provides access to major transportation routes through Interstate 495 and Interstate 95, connecting residents to regional business and cultural centers.
Amesbury transformed from a maritime economy with shipbuilding and textile manufacturing into a center for carriage production and later automobile body manufacturing.
