Mena is a county seat in Polk County, Arkansas, located in the western part of the state near the Ouachita Mountains. The town sits at an elevation of 1,171 feet (357 meters) and covers an area of 6.89 square miles (17.8 square kilometers).
Arthur Edward Stilwell founded the town in 1896 during the construction of the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad. The name honors Folmina Margaretha Janssen-De Goeijen, the wife of a Dutch investor in the railroad project.
University of Arkansas Rich Mountain, evolved from Rich Mountain Vocational-Technical School in 1975, provides educational opportunities for regional students.
The Mena Intermountain Municipal Airport connects the area to larger cities and offers regional flight options. An industrial park hosts manufacturing businesses that serve the local economy.
