Arthur Edward Stilwell founded the town in 1896 during the construction of the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad. The name honors Folmina Margaretha Janssen-De Goeijen, the wife of a Dutch investor in the railroad project.
University of Arkansas Rich Mountain, evolved from Rich Mountain Vocational-Technical School in 1975, provides educational opportunities for regional students.
