Rochdale Village, Housing cooperative in Jamaica, Queens, New York, US.
Rochdale Village is a housing complex sprawling across 120 acres with twenty 13-story buildings arranged in five circular groups around lawns and recreation spaces. The development integrates residential towers with shopping malls, a community center, and extensive parking throughout the site.
The project opened in 1963 on the site of the former Jamaica Race Course as part of the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program. It demonstrated an early model of how cooperatives could deliver affordable housing at scale.
The name comes from an English town where cooperative housing principles first took root, reflecting how this place embodies that shared vision of community living.
Visitors can explore the open green spaces and visit the two shopping malls located throughout the complex. The nearby Locust Manor subway station provides direct access to transportation if you want to explore beyond the development.
The complex operates its own power generation facility, independently supplying electricity to all buildings and common spaces within the development. This level of energy self-sufficiency was unusual for residential developments of that era.
