Rubin Museum of Art, Art museum in Chelsea, Manhattan, United States.
The Rubin Museum of Art is an art museum in Chelsea, Manhattan, focused on the culture and religion of the Himalayan region. The spaces extend over multiple floors with galleries organized by geographic and thematic focus.
The museum was founded in 2004 by private collectors and uses a former department store from the 1970s as its location. The renovation work created a spiral staircase connecting all exhibition levels.
The collections show religious objects and ritual art from the Himalayan region, including painted scrolls and ceremonial robes. Visitors see here items that were used in Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples.
The entrance is located on 17th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenue, just a few minutes' walk from several subway lines. The galleries are accessible by elevator and stairs.
The building features a continuous spiral staircase that runs from the ground floor to the top levels. The architecture invites visitors to experience the exhibitions in a flowing circuit.
