Kalamazoo, Educational hub in southwestern Michigan, United States
Kalamazoo is a mid-sized city in the southwestern portion of Michigan, sitting along a river that curves through low hills. Streets connect older neighborhoods with newer residential areas, while downtown clusters shops and restaurants around a pedestrian zone.
A fur trader founded the settlement in the early 19th century on a trade route once used by indigenous peoples. The city later grew through farming and became home to paper mills and pharmaceutical companies.
The name comes from a Potawatomi word that describes the way light plays across the river. Today the presence of students from three colleges brings energy to coffee shops, bookstores, and gathering places throughout the neighborhoods.
Streets in the center can be explored on foot, while the surrounding area suits cycling. Students and visitors often move between campus and downtown, where shops and services are concentrated.
Dutch immigrants turned the area into a celery center in the 19th century, before the land shifted to other uses. The first open-air pedestrian shopping mall in the United States appeared here in the late 1950s and influenced planning in many American downtowns.
