Holland Tunnel, Road tunnel between Lower Manhattan and Jersey City, United States

The Holland Tunnel stretches 8,558 feet under the Hudson River, containing two parallel tubes that connect New York City with New Jersey.

Construction began in 1920 and finished in 1927, making it the longest underwater vehicular tunnel at that time, named after chief engineer Clifford Holland.

The tunnel connects two distinct urban regions, allowing thousands of vehicles to travel daily between New York City and New Jersey.

The tunnel maintains 84 powerful ventilation fans that completely replace the air inside every 90 seconds to ensure proper air quality.

During a 1949 incident, a truck carrying carbon disulfide caught fire, damaging 500 feet of tunnel ceiling without causing any fatalities.
