Caguas, Mountain municipality in central eastern Puerto Rico.
Caguas is a city in central eastern Puerto Rico positioned between two mountain ranges that shape its landscape. The terrain rises and falls across the municipality, creating a hilly environment with valleys and green spaces throughout.
The city was founded in 1775 with a name honoring an indigenous leader who embraced Christianity. The original designation was San Sebastian del Pinal de Caguax, which later shortened to the name used today.
The Museo de Historia de Caguas displays objects from the indigenous people who first lived here, including pottery and tools that show how daily life worked in ancient times. The collection tells the story of the earliest inhabitants and their way of living.
The city has several hotels and accommodations in the central area where visitors can stay near shops and business districts. Morning and afternoon visits work well for exploring, as the midday heat can be quite intense in the mountain regions.
The city has been a hub for specialized manufacturing for decades, home to diamond cutting workshops and factories producing tobacco and electronics. This industrial legacy makes it a significant production center on the island that often goes unnoticed by tourists.
