Berlin, Historic town in Worcester County, United States.
Berlin is a small town in Worcester County, Maryland, situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and U.S. Route 113. The community covers several square miles in eastern Maryland, located not far from the Atlantic coast.
The settlement originated on the Burley Plantation established by William Tomkins in 1677 at a busy crossroads where travelers would stop. A major fire destroyed much of the area in 1895, after which the community rebuilt.
The historic downtown displays Victorian buildings with Queen Anne, Italianate, and Second Empire details built after the 1895 fire. These structures define the center of town today.
The town sits at the junction of two major routes that make it easy to reach by car. Visitors can explore the downtown area on foot, with most attractions concentrated in a walkable space.
The town's name is pronounced 'Burl-in,' derived from the original Burley Inn that stood here early on. This local pronunciation sets it apart from the European city with the same name.
