Redstone Arsenal, Military base in Madison County, Alabama
Redstone Arsenal is a military base in Madison County, Alabama, occupying a large area north of Huntsville. The installation contains laboratories for missile research, weapon system testing grounds, and office buildings used by military personnel and civilian employees.
The War Department founded this installation in 1941 to manufacture chemical weapons during World War II. After the war ended, the site converted into a missile development center led by German scientists under Wernher von Braun.
The installation maintains partnerships with academic institutions and research organizations, fostering technological advancements in both military and civilian sectors.
Entry requires security clearance at the main gate with valid government-issued photo identification and vehicle registration papers. Visitors should allow extra time for gate processing, especially during morning rush periods.
The grounds house the Marshall Space Flight Center, where engineers developed the Saturn V rocket for Apollo moon missions. An original Saturn V stands today at the adjacent U.S. Space and Rocket Center as a public display.
