The municipality is easy to reach by car along main routes that connect Chicago with its southwestern suburbs. Public facilities such as libraries, swimming pools, and sports fields are spread throughout the area and generally accessible.
On April 21, 1967, a powerful tornado swept through the community and damaged around 900 buildings. The rebuilding effort after this event shaped many neighborhoods and led to new construction standards in the region.
