Pottsville is the county seat of Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania, roughly 97 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The settlement stretches along the west side of the Schuylkill River at around 600 feet (183 meters) above sea level.
John Pott acquired a forge in this area in 1806, and ten years later the town was formally laid out. The community officially gained city status in 1911.
The city carries the name of John Pott, who developed the area, and sits in the center of Pennsylvania's historic anthracite coal region. Visitors can still see 19th-century buildings along the main street that reflect its mining-oriented past.
The Union Station Intermodal Transit Center offers regular bus connections throughout the county and beyond. Visitors can reach other communities in the region from here through regional transportation networks.
A local brewery founded in 1829 is considered the oldest continuously operating brewery in the United States. The operation has run without interruption from the same location for nearly two centuries.
