KeyBank Center, Indoor sports arena in downtown Buffalo, United States.
The KeyBank Center is a multipurpose hall in downtown Buffalo used mainly for hockey games and concerts. The building rises over several floors with seating arranged around an ice surface or a central stage, accommodating just under 20,000 people depending on configuration.
The hall was built in the mid-nineties to give the local hockey club a modern home. Opening took place in autumn 1996, replacing an older stadium that had served as the previous venue.
The building carries a name tied to the financial institution that purchased naming rights. Visitors experience the strong bond between the city and its hockey traditions when fans cheer for the Sabres and the entire hall fills with team colors.
The venue sits near the shore of Lake Erie and is within walking distance of many downtown hotels. Visitors find elevators and ramps for wheelchair users as well as numerous stands selling snacks and drinks.
Massive screens hang above the main stands, showing replays and close-ups from every angle. On event days the ice surface transforms within hours into a concert stage or a lacrosse field, with technicians completely rebuilding the floor.
