Fort Belvoir, Military installation in Fairfax County, United States
Fort Belvoir is a military installation with residential areas in Fairfax County in northern Virginia. The grounds include office buildings, warehouses, training facilities and housing developments for soldiers and their families.
The installation began in 1917 as Camp A. A. Humphreys to train engineers during World War I. In 1935 it received its current name after the former Belvoir plantation of the Fairfax family.
The National Museum of the United States Army on the grounds displays artifacts spanning more than 200 years of United States military history. Visitors can see tanks, uniforms and personal items from soldiers that document different conflicts and eras.
Access to the grounds is only allowed for civilians after prior authorization, and a valid identification is required at the gate. The museum welcomes the public without additional military clearance and sits near the main entrance.
The Fort Belvoir Historic District preserves residential areas built from 1919 to 1948, showing different architectural styles and approaches to military housing. These homes document how living conditions for soldiers and their families changed over three decades.
