Alewife Brook Reservation

Alewife Brook Reservation is a nature reserve and state park covering 136 acres with wetlands, wooded uplands, and meadows across the landscape. These varied habitats support numerous native and migratory bird species throughout the seasons.

The land was formally protected in 1900 after existing for centuries as tidal wetland known as the Great Swamp in colonial times. This shift reflects the effort to preserve natural areas as the surrounding city expanded.

This place serves the community as a learning hub for wetland ecosystems and conservation efforts through programs held throughout the year. Local residents frequently use the trails for bird watching and connecting with nature in their neighbourhood.

The park is located near Alewife MBTA station and open from sunrise to sunset with walking trails, sports facilities, and fishing spots available. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and come prepared for the muddy and wet conditions common in wetland areas.

The reservation includes a specially designed 3.4-acre wetland that manages stormwater by storing and filtering runoff from surrounding urban areas. This system prevents flooding while simultaneously creating new habitats for wildlife.
