Janelia Research Campus

Janelia Research Campus is a research facility spanning 689 acres with laboratories, research buildings, and housing set among rolling hills in Loudoun County. The various structures are arranged to respect the natural landscape while providing scientists with spaces to conduct their work.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute founded this center in 2006, converting a former farm into a modern research facility. This transformation marked the beginning of an institution focused on fundamental biological research.

Scientists from different fields work side by side in open laboratory spaces, sharing ideas and resources as part of their daily routine. This collaborative approach shapes how research unfolds across the campus.

The grounds are extensive and hilly, so it helps to familiarize yourself with the layout beforehand or bring a map with you. Many visitors prefer driving or joining guided tours to explore the different areas.

The main research building features an arc-shaped form that follows the natural topography of the site. Extensive glass surfaces run through the structure, allowing people working inside to experience daylight and the surrounding landscape during their work.
