Pawtuckaway State Park
Pawtuckaway State Park, State park in Nottingham, United States.
Pawtuckaway State Park is a protected area in Nottingham, Rockingham County, covering a large lake with a swimming area, an extensive network of trails, and nearly 200 forested campsites. The grounds extend across wooded hills and flat shoreline zones, with the lake serving as a central feature for both day visitors and campers.
Glaciers moved massive boulders into this region during the last ice age, and these rocks remain scattered across the territory today. Volcanic activity in the geological past shaped ring dikes and other formations visible along several trails.
The park maintains a fire tower at the mountain summit where visitors can learn about forest preservation methods and regional geological formations.
Visitors arriving at midday or on weekends often encounter larger crowds at the beach and parking areas, while early mornings or late afternoons offer quieter conditions. Hikers can choose between short loop trails on flat terrain and longer ascents to higher viewpoints.
A fire tower on the summit provides space for information about wildfire management and displays regional geology through small exhibits. From the tower, outlines of volcanic rock formations rise above the surrounding vegetation.
