Frederick Hart completed the sculpture in 1984 as a complement to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall. The work came about after public requests for a more traditional representation alongside Maya Lin's abstract wall design.
The three soldiers wear standard combat gear from the Vietnam era and stand in a posture that shows watchfulness. Visitors often notice how the figures face toward the wall of names, creating a quiet connection between the two memorials.
The memorial sits within Constitution Gardens and can be reached easily on foot. Maintenance takes place several times yearly to protect the surface and ensure accessibility.
Hart used real soldiers as models to capture authentic body postures and facial expressions. The patina of the bronze material varies slightly between skin areas and uniform, creating a natural color gradation.
