Lebanon is a county seat in Wilson County, Tennessee. The center consists of a traditional downtown with 19th-century brick buildings and commercial streets that spread outward to residential neighborhoods and business zones.
The city was founded in 1801 and received its name from the cedar trees growing in the area, which reminded settlers of the biblical cedars of Lebanon. The establishment of Cumberland University in 1842 turned the place into an educational center for the region.
The Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery opened in 2010 as a resting place for military veterans who served the country. Its layout follows the pattern of national cemeteries with rows of white markers stretching across the grounds in symmetrical order.
Interstate 40 connects the city directly with Nashville, which lies about 25 miles to the west. Several exits lead into the town area and provide quick access to different parts of the city.
Cumberland University has produced more than 80 members of Congress since its founding and trained one Nobel Peace Prize winner. The campus sits right in the middle of town and remains a visible part of daily life in Lebanon.
