Brevard, Mountain town in Transylvania County, United States.
Brevard is a mountain town in western North Carolina, sitting at 680 meters elevation in Transylvania County. The streets spread across roughly 13 square kilometers and are home to around 7,600 residents.
The town was named county seat in 1861 by the North Carolina General Assembly and named after Colonel Ephraim Brevard, a physician from the Revolutionary War era. It has since grown into the administrative center of the region.
The Brevard Music Center brings students and musicians from across the country every summer, filling the town with classical music and performances. The concerts take place in open halls and have become a core part of local life during the warm months.
The area receives over 170 centimeters (67 inches) of rainfall each year, so waterproof clothing is a good idea. Temperatures range from around 3 degrees Celsius (38 degrees Fahrenheit) in winter to 22 degrees Celsius (71 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer.
The forests and protected areas around town hold more than 250 waterfalls, more than almost any other region in the Appalachians. Many of them lie within Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest, which together cover over 40,000 hectares (100,000 acres) of public land.
