Highlands, Mountain town in Macon County, North Carolina, United States.
Highlands is a settlement in the southern Appalachian region of North Carolina, located on an elevated plateau. The town sits at roughly 1255 meters (4118 feet) within a large forested area and offers access to several hiking trails and waterfalls in the surrounding landscape.
Two entrepreneurs founded the settlement in 1875 after identifying the location as favorable for future trade routes between larger cities. The first streets and buildings went up quickly, and the elevation soon attracted visitors seeking relief from lowland climates.
Theater performances and concerts take place regularly at the local performing arts venue, drawing both residents and visitors throughout the year. The architecture in the center preserves the look of a late 19th-century mountain settlement, while daily life follows the rhythm of the changing seasons.
The climate at this elevation brings cool winters and mild summers, with frequent rainfall that can occur in any season. Streets in the center are easy to explore on foot, while trails leading to waterfalls require sturdy footwear.
Three waterfalls in the area allow visitors to walk behind the cascading water and view the falls from the opposite side. This perspective offers a different look at the landscape and falling water, particularly striking on sunny days.
