Damariscotta, town in Lincoln County, Maine, USA
Damariscotta is a small town in Lincoln County, Maine, set along a short river that connects a tidal lake to the sea. The town has a compact downtown of brick storefronts from the 1800s and a working waterfront where fishing and oyster boats are docked.
The town grew in the 18th and 19th centuries as a shipbuilding hub, with river access and timber making it practical for boat construction. When that industry faded, the town shifted toward fishing and oyster farming, which have remained central ever since.
The name Damariscotta comes from an Abenaki word meaning roughly "place of the little fish." That connection to the water is still easy to spot today, in the oyster restaurants along the main street and in the working boats that come and go from the harbor.
The downtown area is easy to walk, with the main street, shops, and the waterfront all close together on flat ground. For those who want to get out on the water, kayak rentals and guided tours are available nearby on the river and surrounding coves.
Each autumn, the town holds a festival where participants carve giant pumpkins into boats and paddle them down the river. The pumpkins used can weigh over 1,000 pounds (about 450 kg), making the race as much a test of engineering as of paddling.
