Lincoln County

Lincoln County is an administrative region along Maine's coast with extensive shoreline and numerous islands. The territory is administered from Wiscasset and encompasses several towns and villages spread throughout the area.

Lincoln County was established in 1760 and initially stretched across vast territory that extended far inland and eastward. Over time the region was reduced as new counties were carved out from its original boundaries.

Oyster harvesting along the Damariscotta River remains deeply rooted in local identity and shapes how coastal communities here live and work. You can see this tradition alive in the working waterfronts and family operations that still exist today.

Visitors can access central services and regional information in Wiscasset. The area is best explored by car, with winding roads connecting coastal towns and island access points throughout.

Monhegan Island, part of this territory, remains a remote outpost with a handful of year-round residents who live apart from the mainland. The island is known for its isolated character and minimal modern development.
