Popham Beach

Popham Beach is a state park beach with three miles of sandy shoreline that runs from Fort Popham to the Morse River mouth. The beach reveals views of Wood Island and Fox Island at low tide due to the exposed tidal flats that extend into the water.

The site marks the location of the Popham Colony, an English settlement established in 1607 that was abandoned after just one year. This early attempt at European settlement reveals the challenges of coastal colonization in early North America.

The military structures were built to control river traffic and remain visible reminders of the area's strategic importance centuries ago. Walking around them gives visitors a sense of how geography shaped the settlement patterns along the coast.

The beach has bathhouses, solar-heated showers, and grilling stations with lifeguards working during the warm months. Plan your visit around the tide cycles, since the water level greatly affects what parts of the shore you can access.
