Popham Colony, Archaeological site in Phippsburg, Maine, United States.

This 17th-century English colonial settlement site contains excavated foundations, fort outlines, and structural remains at the mouth of the Kennebec River.

The colony, established in 1607 by George Popham with 100 settlers, lasted only one year due to harsh winters and limited resources.

The settlement represents the first documented English shipbuilding effort in North America, where colonists constructed the vessel Virginia in 1608.

Archaeological excavations between 1994 and 2013 revealed multiple structures including the Admiral's house, fortification walls, and storage buildings.

The discovery of John Hunt's 1607 detailed fort plan in a Madrid archive enabled researchers to accurately locate and validate the settlement's position.
