El Yunque National Forest, Tropical rainforest in northeastern Puerto Rico, United States
The national forest contains 28,000 acres of dense vegetation, cascading waterfalls, hiking trails, and mountains reaching elevations up to 3,500 feet.
The Spanish Crown designated El Yunque as a protected reserve in 1876, and President Theodore Roosevelt established it as the Luquillo Forest Reserve in 1903.
The indigenous Taíno people considered the mountain sacred and incorporated its presence into their spiritual beliefs and traditional ceremonies.
Visitors can access multiple marked trails, including the popular La Mina path leading to swimming areas and the Mount Britton route to observation towers.
The forest houses the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot and the native Coquí tree frog, which produces distinctive sounds throughout the night.
