General Norzagaray Bridge, Road bridge in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
General Norzagaray Bridge is a brick arch structure crossing Frailes Creek with eight barrel vault sections built from stone and masonry. It connects the neighborhoods of Caimito and Tortugo today and carries Puerto Rico Highway 873 across the water.
The bridge was built in 1855 during Spanish colonial times as an infrastructure project linking the region. In 1927 it received modern improvements when workers added steel supports and a concrete deck.
The bridge displays Spanish masonry craftsmanship from the 1800s in its arched stone design. When crossing it today, you can still see the carefully laid brick vaults that earlier builders created.
The bridge is accessible by car via Puerto Rico Highway 873 and sits between two residential neighborhoods. It is best visited during the day when light shows the brick construction clearly.
The original earthen design was replaced with modern steel supports in 1927, making it quite advanced for that time. This transformation was one of few such modernizations on the island in the early twentieth century.
