Metacomet Trail, Hiking trail in central Connecticut, United States
The Metacomet Trail is a hiking path in central Connecticut that stretches across diverse landscapes shaped by an ancient ridge formation. Along the way, hikers encounter waterfalls, cliff faces, woodlands, swamps, lakes, and farmland that characterize the route through the Metacomet Ridge.
The trail gained recognition in 2009 when it became part of the New England National Scenic Trail through federal legislation signed by President Barack Obama. This designation brought national protection to a route that had been traveled for generations.
The trail takes its name from Metacomet, a Wampanoag leader, and passes near historic sites like Old Newgate Prison and Heublein Tower that reflect the region's layered past. Hikers encounter these places woven into the landscape, connecting them to the people and events that shaped the area.
The trail is maintained by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association with blue blazes marking the path, making it easy for hikers to follow. Multiple access points spread across Hartford and New Haven counties allow you to start and finish at different locations.
The trail traverses ancient geological formations from the Triassic period, featuring basalt ridges that rise hundreds of feet above the valleys of the Connecticut, Farmington, and Quinnipiac Rivers. These dramatic rock formations create the distinctive topography that hikers experience throughout the journey.
