The Farm, Intentional community in Lewis County, Tennessee, United States.
The Farm is a community-managed settlement in Lewis County, Tennessee, that spreads over forested and agricultural land marked by simple wooden buildings and areas for shared activities. Paths connect living quarters with workplaces, gardens, and a central meeting space where members gather.
Stephen Gaskin and a group of around three hundred people from San Francisco founded this place in the early seventies of the twentieth century after acquiring the land together. Over the following decades, the originally commune-organized community transformed into a permanent residential project with an ecological focus.
The community here takes its name from the original purpose of the land and refers to the agricultural activity still practiced on a smaller scale today. Visitors regularly see residents gardening or exchanging homegrown produce, which shapes daily life here.
Guided tours provide insight into the daily life of the community and are usually offered by appointment to avoid disrupting operations. Those wishing to stay for several days can inquire about overnight options that facilitate direct experience of communal living.
This place is one of the oldest surviving communities of its kind in North America while largely preserving its original structure. Several nonprofit organizations have emerged from the community and now work in areas such as conservation and humanitarian aid worldwide.
