National Harbor, Waterfront district in Prince George's County, Maryland.
National Harbor is a waterfront district in Prince George's County, Maryland, where a boardwalk runs along the Potomac River and several retail pavilions, dining venues, lodging facilities and leisure spaces are spread across a 120-hectare site. The complex divides into zones with plazas, piers and green spaces linked by wide walkways.
The site grew from Salubria Plantation, established in 1827, whose main house burned down in 1981. After that event, planners drew up a mixed-use development and construction began in the early 21st century.
The area gets its name from its position on the Potomac, where vessels once docked to carry goods into the young capital. Visitors now gather along the waterfront promenade, and live music events bring sound and street performers to the plaza on a regular basis.
Small boats and shuttle buses carry travelers across the Potomac to Washington, Alexandria and other destinations, departing from several docks along the waterfront. Visitors looking to navigate the area can follow signs on the boardwalk or use maps posted at various points along the river edge.
An observation wheel 175 feet (53 meters) in diameter rotates above the river and offers views of Washington and Virginia, while each gondola is climate-controlled and outfitted for year-round rides. The ride lasts about 15 minutes and carries passengers in enclosed cabins smoothly over the water.
