Allegheny Islands State Park
Allegheny Islands State Park, Three river islands in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, US.
Allegheny Islands State Park protects a collection of small islands and shoals within the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh. The islands retain their natural vegetation and provide habitat for wildlife in an otherwise developed region.
The park was established in 1980 to protect river islands that remained undeveloped while Pittsburgh's industrial growth transformed the surrounding area. These islands escaped the urbanization that reshaped western Pennsylvania's landscape.
The protected islands function as outdoor laboratories for researchers studying river ecosystems and natural habitats in western Pennsylvania's waterway systems.
Reaching the islands requires a boat, so plan your water-based visit ahead of time. The protected land has no facilities or services, making it necessary to bring all supplies and equipment you will need.
The park's upper island measures 14 acres opposite Black Run, while the 34-acre lower island sits between Falling Springs Run and Black Run.
