Apex Historic District, Historic district in Apex, North Carolina, US.
Apex Historic District is a collection of 60 buildings dating from 1870 to 1940, concentrated primarily along Salem Street. The structures feature brick construction with detailed facades displaying Craftsman, Queen Anne, Classical Revival, and other period architectural styles.
Devastating fires in 1905 and 1911 prompted property owners to rebuild using fire-resistant brick construction, establishing the durable masonry character seen today. This reconstruction period resulted in a cohesive architectural landscape dominated by solid brick structures built to withstand future fires.
The district functions as a social hub where residents and visitors encounter local art galleries, independent shops, and family-owned restaurants that shape the character of Salem Street. The mix of architectural styles visible on facades tells the story of different building periods and the tastes of past owners.
Visitors can walk through the district to see buildings and stop at galleries, bakeries, and shops that line the streets. Daytime visits work best since businesses are open and the streetscape is most active.
The town's name comes from its location at the highest elevation point along the Chatham Railroad line running between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. This geographic distinction made it a notable stop on an important 19th-century rail route.
