Battery Park, Green space in downtown Burlington, United States
Battery Park is a 14-acre green space in downtown Burlington located on higher ground with views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains. The park includes a waterfront promenade, children's playground, and a performance bandshell for events.
During the War of 1812, American forces stationed at the park successfully defended Burlington against British attack with naval support on August 3, 1813. This military action marked a turning point in the town's wartime experience.
The park features bronze and wooden sculptures honoring local military leaders and Native American heritage. These artworks are placed along walking paths where visitors naturally encounter them while exploring the grounds.
The park is accessible from Battery, College, and Sherman Streets with multiple entry points throughout the grounds. A seasonal ice skating rink operates in winter while summer brings live music and performances at the bandshell.
Writer Rudyard Kipling praised the sunsets viewed from the park, ranking them among the world's finest natural displays. He compared them favorably to only one other location: the Ngong Hills in Kenya.
