Battle of Carthage State Historic Site, Civil War battlefield in Carthage, Missouri.
The Battle of Carthage State Historic Site spans 7.4 acres of preserved land where Union and Confederate forces clashed during the American Civil War.
On July 5, 1861, Missouri State Guard forces under Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson engaged with Colonel Franz Sigel's Union troops in one of the earliest battles of the Civil War.
The site maintains Carter Spring, which served as an encampment area for both Union and Confederate soldiers, representing the division within Missouri during the conflict.
Visitors can access interpretive panels and historical markers throughout the grounds, providing detailed information about troop movements and battle strategies from 1861.
The Battle of Carthage preceded the Battle of Bull Run by eleven days, marking it as one of the first organized land engagements of the American Civil War.
