Capitol Reflection Pool, Reflecting pool in United States Capitol Complex, Washington, D.C.
The Capitol Reflecting Pool spans six acres at the eastern end of the National Mall, mirroring the United States Capitol Building and Grant Memorial.
The pool emerged from plans by architectural firm Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill in the 1960s, with construction finishing in 1971 to reduce vehicle traffic.
The limestone-edged water surface creates reflections of the Capitol dome while providing a gathering space for visitors and local wildlife.
The pool features sloped steps leading to the water level, with broad limestone edges that offer seating areas facing the Capitol Building.
The water surface occupies more than half of Union Square, forming a counterpart to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at the National Mall's opposite end.
