Cathedral of St. Joseph, Catholic cathedral in St. Joseph, Missouri, United States.
The Cathedral of St. Joseph is an Italianate church in Missouri with two prominent towers topped by pyramidal roofs. A columned portico was added to the front during early 1900s renovations and now frames the main entrance.
The parish was founded in 1845 by Father Thomas Scanlan, and a small brick church was dedicated in 1847. The building was later redesigned in Italianate style and received major renovations in the early 1900s.
The cathedral functions as a co-cathedral for the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, sharing ecclesiastical duties with the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception.
The cathedral is open to visitors and holds services throughout the week. It is helpful to check ahead if you want to attend a specific service or see the interior during a particular time.
The Sisters of the Sacred Heart established the first parochial school in 1901, beginning organized Catholic education in the city. This school became an important part of the community's religious and educational life.
