Chahinkapa Zoo, Animal park in Wahpeton, North Dakota, United States.
Chahinkapa Zoo is an animal park spanning about 29 acres and home to more than 200 animals representing around 100 species, including white rhinos, Bengal tigers, and orangutans. The grounds are laid out in a way that makes walking through and viewing the animals straightforward.
The zoo was founded in 1933 after the city of Wahpeton acquired the land from the federal government in 1903. What began as modest animal enclosures eventually grew into the established facility that exists today.
The Rodger Ehnstrom Nature Center functions as a place where visitors learn about animal behavior and wildlife through hands-on educational programs. The center plays a role in helping people understand the natural world in a direct and approachable way.
An on-site campground offers cabins, RV sites with electrical connections, and tent sites for overnight stays. Visitors who want to spend more time can stay directly on the grounds.
A carousel from 1926 with hand-carved wooden horses and an original antique band organ still operates on the grounds. This working example gives visitors a rare glimpse into recreation from earlier decades.
