Charles Street, thoroughfare in Boston, US

Charles Street is a main road in Boston that runs north and south through the city center, starting at Leverett Circle and ending near the Theater District. It passes through Beacon Hill, where sidewalks are lined with brick townhouses from the 1800s, small antique shops, cafes, and old hardware stores on the ground floors.

Charles Street has served as a central route through Beacon Hill since the early 1800s, when the neighborhood was developed on land created from filling in part of the Charles River. Over time, it changed from a residential lane for prominent Boston families into a commercial street with shops and public transit connections.

Walking this street today feels like moving through a small European high street, with shop windows set into old brick walls and residents doing daily errands on foot rather than by car. Some doorways still show original hardware like cast iron knobs and handles, kept from the time when these row houses were first built.

The street is straight and easy to follow, which makes it a useful reference point if you wander into the narrow, one-way side streets of Beacon Hill. Sidewalks are narrow, so a weekday morning walk is generally easier than a weekend afternoon when they fill with visitors.

A shop here specializes in old door knobs, hinges, and other hardware salvaged from Beacon Hill homes, which visitors rarely expect to find on a city street. The street also appears in the film The Departed, with a scene shot among its brick facades.
