Workers discovered this underground formation in 1906 while laying foundations for buildings in downtown Charles Town. The discovery led to growing local interest and eventual development as a tourist attraction.
In the 1920s, the space operated as Lakeland Caverns, drawing visitors for underground boat tours and social events held in a cavern ballroom that served the town's community life.
The cave remains closed to the public as all entrances have been sealed for safety reasons. Visitors can learn about the site's history through historical markers and information displays located around downtown Charles Town.
