Crompton Loom Works
Crompton Loom Works, Industrial complex in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Crompton Loom Works is an industrial facility with connected brick buildings of varying heights positioned along Green Street. The structures span multiple stories and display Renaissance Revival features including reinforced corners and decorative roof brackets throughout the complex.
George Crompton founded the facility in 1860 as a manufacturing center for power looms used in fancy fabric weaving. The operation grew into one of Worcester's largest employers before closing in the late 20th century.
The facility shaped Worcester's identity as a manufacturing hub, drawing hundreds of workers daily to its production floors. Its ornate brickwork and corner details reflect the pride factory owners took in their industrial output.
The site sits at the intersection of Green and Harrison Streets south of downtown, making it straightforward to locate. Visitors should note the buildings serve office and storage purposes today, so interior access may be limited without prior arrangement.
Beyond loom manufacturing, the facility produced can sealing machines and bowling pinsetters, and ran its own materials testing laboratory. This product diversity reveals how the company expanded its capabilities beyond textile equipment.
